How Much Storage Do Game Updates Need?

Estimate storage for multiple games and updates, compare it with free device space, and avoid counting installed games twice with a worked example.

A game download size is only one part of a storage plan. Installed files, future updates, saves, and temporary installation space can change what fits on a phone or computer. Start with the free space your device reports today, then model the games or additional files you actually plan to add.

Start with free space, not advertised capacity

A device sold with 128 GB does not necessarily have 128 GB available for games. The operating system, photos, apps, and existing game data already use some of it. Read the available space in the device's storage settings before making a plan.

On Android, storage settings and cleanup options vary by device. On iPhone or iPad, Settings → General → iPhone Storage or iPad Storage shows usage and app details. Device storage is the relevant budget here; available cloud storage does not automatically increase space for an installed game.

  • Use the same unit, preferably GB, for every value.
  • Check free space again after a large download or update.
  • Use installed size when available; a compressed download can differ from the installed game.

Separate new installations from existing games

For a new installation, include the game's full expected size. If the game is already installed, its current files are already reflected in your device's free-space reading. Enter only the additional space you still need, rather than subtracting its entire installed size a second time.

The calculator's update model adds average update size × expected updates. That is a planning assumption, not a prediction of how a particular store patches files. Some updates replace content instead of adding the full download permanently.

Worked example: three games and a reserve

Suppose you plan three new installations. Game A is 3.2 GB with four estimated 0.4 GB updates: 4.8 GB. Game B is 1.8 GB with three 0.2 GB updates: 2.4 GB. Game C is 5 GB with two 0.5 GB updates: 6 GB. Together, the games and modeled updates need 13.2 GB.

Choose another 2 GB as a reserve, and the plan needs 15.2 GB. With 18 GB free before installation, the estimate leaves 2.8 GB. With only 12 GB free, it is short by 3.2 GB. These invented example sizes demonstrate the calculation; they are not sizes for Dorn Bros releases.

  • Games and updates: 4.8 + 2.4 + 6 = 13.2 GB.
  • Including your chosen reserve: 13.2 + 2 = 15.2 GB.
  • Remaining space: 18 − 15.2 = 2.8 GB.

Choose a reserve for the installation

Temporary unpacking, cache, saves, downloadable content, and other files can require room beyond the modeled game size. There is no single reserve that guarantees every installation will succeed. Follow any requirement shown by the game, store, or device and enter a reserve appropriate to your plan.

When free space is not known, the calculator can still total your games, but it cannot say whether they fit. A blank free-space field means unknown, rather than zero available space.

Revise the plan after an actual patch

After a patch, compare installed size and free space with the estimate. Use the observed change to revise later assumptions. Before removing a game or its data to reclaim space, check how that game saves progress and whether the progress is backed up.

  • Record installed size before and after an update when possible.
  • Keep optional content separate if you may not install it.
  • Compare small and large update scenarios instead of relying on one exact forecast.

Frequently asked questions

Does every update permanently add its full download size?

No. An update may replace files, add content, or need temporary working space. Use actual installed-size changes when available.

Should I include an already-installed game's full size?

Not when comparing against current free space. Its files are already accounted for; plan only additional space still needed.

What if I do not know my free space?

You can estimate the required total, but whether it fits remains unknown until you check the device.

Does the calculator read my phone?

No. It works with the sizes and free-space value you enter in your browser.
